Swans

Last week we visited the George Langman Sanctuary which is located west of Orillia. They have some swans, ducks, rabbits and pheasants to look at, and it is well worth the stop there.

The part I enjoyed the most was seeing the swans. They have both trumpeter swans and mute swans. I didn’t know the difference before, so had to look them up to find out which they were.

Mute Swan

The mute swans came from Eurasia. They breed in the wild in some areas and can be identified by the bright orange bill. They also have a knob on the forehead.

Even though their name is “mute”, they still make some hissing sounds and some snorting noises.

These are young mute swans. Beautiful birds.

Trumpeter Swan

It was harder to see the trumpeter swan as he was farther out. I did manage to get one or two photos of him. He has a black bill, and holds his neck and head differently. They were almost extinct but are making a comeback.

We didn’t get to hear the swan make a noise, but they do make  low pitched bugle like calls.
