We have a lot of blue jays coming to our feeders at this time of year. They are timid birds, but when interested in the feeders, there is a chance to photograph them.
Blue jays are so common that we don’t think about them often here in Ontario. When my sister is here from the west, she is fascinated with them.
I did learn some interesting facts when I was doing some research:
- the feathers are structured so that they reflect light off the bird – this makes it look blue even though it apparently is not actually blue
- males and females look alike – but the male is slightly larger
- if they are feeling peaceful, they lower the crest on the top of their heads
- if they are excited, surprised, or aggressive, the crest stands up
- if they are frightened, then the crest bristles out in all directions
- they belong to the Crow family
- they eat tent caterpillars, which is good news
