We have a neighbourhood raven, whom we have named Bob. He/she started coming around here a couple of weeks ago, and is getting comfortable around people.
Apparently, they are one of the smartest birds. Usually, the ones around here are very timid and won’t let you get near them, so this is unusual for us to see one so close.
As you can see in this picture, Bob comes very close to my husband, especially when there is any food involved. Apparently they will eat seeds, but Bob is not interested. Bob prefers human food.
Bob likes to peck at things, which can get him into trouble at times.
Getting into my flowers did not please me, and so Bob received a lecture about them.
We are learning some things about ravens:
– they like to eat anything just about anything
– they can do rolls and somersaults in the air (we have seen them fly upside down at times)
– a pair of ravens who are breeding hold territories, and will try to keep other ravens out of it
– ravens are believed to mate for life
– apparently one raven lived to at least 22 years in the wild
– other sources say they can live between 25-30 years
We don’t know how long Bob will be with us, but we are enjoying him so far. Hopefully he doesn’t get into too much trouble in the neighbourhood.
