We have both buffleheads and goldeneyes (ducks) come to our lake during migration times in the spring and in the fall. They seem to travel together. Both are fishing ducks, and we often see them diving and bobbing up again. They are skittish and it is hard to get close enough to take a good photo of them.
These are the buffleheads. We see more of them than the goldeneyes.
This is the male bufflehead during breeding season. The black and white markings show up pretty good.
This is the female bufflehead.
These are the goldeneyes. They were further away, so these pictures are not as sharp, but we can still see the differences.
This is the male goldeneye. His eye certainly shows up when you can get close to him. His markings are different than the buffleheads.
This is the female goldeneye. She has the gold coloured eye, and her beak is orange. I think the shadow is covering up the fact that her whole beak is orange.
