We’ve been blessed with a flock of dark-eyed juncos in our backyard for the last week or so. They are getting more comfortable with the noises of us moving around and are coming to the window feeder more often. Usually they would just feed off of the ground and not come close to the house.
Juncos are sometimes referred to as “snowbirds”. They are little sparrows, and are one of the most common birds in North America.
One dark-eyed junco lived to be at least 11 years and 4 months old in West Virginia. It had been banded that many years before it was recaptured and released again. I didn’t realize that they could live that long.
In our area, they are gray and white. Apparently they are various colours and may be reddish-brown on the back and/or sides.
