On our regular walks in the springtime, we look for the fungi growing on this old stump. When we first see them they are firm and very nice looking. I believe they are called Dryad’s Saddle Fungi, according to several websites I looked at.

When they grow on trunks, they often look like saddles, but they can also look like a funnel.

I think what attracts us is the design on the fungus. When it is “fresh” and not old, it looks bright and clean.

Apparently new ones can be good to eat, but please don’t eat them based on this article. Make sure that you do some good research before attempting this. I don’t plan to try eating them.
