Grasshoppers

What do I know about grasshoppers except that they feel like they can be a nuisance? I enjoyed taking photos of some grasshoppers this week. We seem to be having an abundance of them this year.

There are all kinds. Ours are green, which helps them to blend in with their surroundings.  They can be green, olive, or brown and may have yellow or red markings.

Their antennae are sensitive to touch and smell. I was interested to see that the legs have claws on the end for gripping.

Most eat vegetation from many plant sources, though some are omnivorous and will eat animal tissue and faeces. Generally though, they prefer grasses.

These were on our hydrangea, which has had problems with leaf tied caterpillars this spring. It isn’t having a good year, but is still doing okay.

Amazing how complicated their bodies look and how they function. Another example of God’s wonderful creation!
