When I was out in my kayak last week, I saw this young deer down at the edge of the water. We are seeing a lot more deer this year. It seems that almost every time we go for a drive, we see at least one or two.
They are called white-tailed deer because the underside of their tail is white, and when they are alerted by danger, they raise their tail. White-tailed deer are the smallest of the deer family in North America.
They can run as fast as 30 miles per hour to escape their predators. We’ve seen deer jump quite high when they are running. Apparently they can jump up to 10 feet, and as far as 30 feet.
They eat all kinds of plants, and especially seem to enjoy eating my hostas, and those of our neighbours. We have to be diligent at this time of year to keep our plants from being eaten.
This one did not seem nervous at all, and kept looking to see what I was doing. It stayed around for quite awhile.
