Recently a pair of loons built a nest in the small bay further down the lake from our place. It was a very special experience for us to see one so close. The problem was that the nest was so close to the shore and cottagers’ docks. We were concerned that it was not a good place for the nest.
My camera has a 600 mm lens, so I was able to take pictures from a good distance away.
However, the nest was very close to shore and the road, and we saw it with its head down. This is the way the loon tries to hide, and it can slip off of the nest quickly.
There was one egg in the nest to begin with. We don’t know if she laid another egg as the story ends with the nest being abandoned. Since loons need to have at least 3 weeks of sitting on the nest incubating the eggs, we don’t believe the egg hatched. The loons are still on our lake, and we are hoping they try again as we haven’t seen baby loons for a long time.
