Lately we’ve had fog in the mornings. This is a great time to go out in the kayak and enjoy the quietness of the morning.
When I was out there the other day, I was able to get fairly close to a loon that was doing its daily ritual of preening. Preening is necessary to make sure the feathers are cleaned and will keep cold water from getting through to their skin. Often they roll to their side so they can reach the feathers. They are much whiter underneath.
Often they will flap their wings, either during the process or at the end of the process. This loon was very cooperative, and I was able to get some photos of the loon flapping its wings. This is the part I enjoy watching.
