We have several mourning doves staying in our area. I know a lot of people find them to be a nuisance, but we have been enjoying seeing them.
This morning they were sitting on trees with the sun shining on them, and the trees behind were in shadow – perfect chance to get some pictures.
This one was preening, cleaning its wings. This picture shows the “nictitating membrane” that protects their eyes when they need protection. At first it looks like their eyes are blind, but it is an extra eyelid beneath the outer eyelid.
This was an interesting picture. The dove looks like it is disgusted with me for taking its photo.
This has to be the oddest picture, but I like the way the tail feathers are fanned out as the dove is preening.
