We don’t see wood ducks on our lake very often. These two have been staying for a few days, so I was pleased to get a few pictures this morning.
Wood Ducks do not nest on the ground as many other ducks do. They nest in cavities in trees and are comfortable flying through woods. Ducklings jump to the ground from their cavity nest one day after hatching, and apparently have jumped safely from heights up to 291 feet.
I’ve seen one fly down from a tree once, but this is the first time I’ve seen them on a lake.
What a beautiful bird God has created. The markings of the male are very striking.
